■ About Haneri (半襟)
A "haneri" is a collar insert sewn onto the collar (eri) of a kimono's undergarment, the "juban." It functions as a decorative scarf that protects the juban from getting dirty. It's called "haneri" because its length is about half that of the actual kimono collar.
While traditionally white, haneri have evolved with the times to come in a wide variety of colors and materials, some even adorned with embroidery or beads, gradually becoming elements of both aesthetics and fashion. Since the collar is the part of the outfit closest to the face, it's considered a key point in demonstrating one's skill in wearing a kimono!
