The process leaves natural "fire marks" from the direct contact with the wood fire, and the ash from the burning wood settles on the piece, resulting in a warm, rich, and varied color palette that cannot be replicated by electric or gas kilns. Compared to typical electric and gas kilns, wood firing—from stacking the kiln, ignition, sealing, to cooling—takes approximately 8-10 days. Furthermore, the intense kiln pressure, combined with factors like humidity, wood dryness, the pace of stoking, and kiln placement, can influence the success of a piece, leading to a higher rate of breakage. Experienced wood-firing artisans meticulously consider airflow and velocity when stacking the kiln, planning the placement of pieces of various sizes, estimating the path of the flames, and determining the timing and intensity of stoking.
