Although he has always said that he did not draw from Japanese manga, his distinctive wide-eyed portraits have often prompted art critics to draw parallels between the two. Instead, he insists that by pairing innocent children with cynical expressions or out-of-place objects such as sharp knives, his work elevates to a different spiritual level, reflecting on important issues of religion and philosophy.
