1. Showcasing the Beauty of Traditional Chinese Characters
Highlighting the beauty and versatility of traditional Chinese characters, the characters "臺灣" (Taiwan) are artfully shaped to form the island of Taiwan (a registered trademark of Taiwan Typographic Island). The strokes depict the central mountain range and western plains, while the deliberately "missing" six dots in the two "糸" components of the character "灣" represent the six outlying islands: Penghu, Kinmen, Matsu, Little Liuqiu, Green Island, and Orchid Island. This typographic island then inspires the design of six representative animals found on Taiwan: the butterfly, fiddler crab, green sea turtle, Formosan black bear, black-faced spoonbill, and Lanyu scops-owl.
2. The Rich Biodiversity of Taiwan
Despite its small area of approximately 36,000 square kilometers, making it nearly invisible on a world map, Taiwan boasts an astonishing natural environment and resources. This is due to:
The collision of the Eurasian and Philippine tectonic plates, which formed the central mountain ranges;
Its geographical location along the Tropic of Cancer;
Its surrounding seas, influenced by the Kuroshio and Taiwan warm currents.
These factors have created a natural treasure trove of biodiversity, a unique characteristic that few islands (or nations) can rival. To illustrate this, we've adopted a "puzzle" concept: "Six Postcards, One Taiwan Island" to emphasize Taiwan's diverse and abundant natural resources. Each animal postcard is placed in its corresponding habitat: the black-faced spoonbill in Tainan, the Formosan black bear in the Yushan region, the Lanyu scops-owl on Orchid Island, the green sea turtle in Penghu, butterflies found throughout the island, and fiddler crabs along the western coast, both north and south.
3. Concept and Spirit
Each postcard provides an introduction to the animal's characteristics in both Chinese and English, along with its location marked on a world map. If you're ever unsure where to begin when sharing Taiwan's wonders, let these six postcards guide you as you proudly introduce "Formosa" - Taiwan.
