Showcasing the Beauty of Traditional Chinese Characters Highlighting the beauty and versatility of traditional Chinese characters, the characters "臺灣" (Taiwan) are artfully shaped to form the island of Taiwan (a registered trademark of Taiwan Typographic Island). The strokes depict the central mountain range and western plains, while the deliberately "missing" six dots in the two "糸" components of the character "灣" represent the six outlying islands: Penghu, Kinmen, Matsu, Little Liuqiu, Green Island, and Orchid Island. This typographic island then inspires the design of six representative animals found on Taiwan: the butterfly, fiddler crab, green sea turtle, Formosan black bear, black-faced spoonbill, and Lanyu scops-owl. 2. The Rich Biodiversity of Taiwan Despite its small area of approximately 36,000 square kilometers, making it nearly invisible on a world map, Taiwan boasts an astonishing natural environment and resources.
