The Heart Sutra (Prajñāpāramitā Hṛdaya Sūtra) When Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara was practicing the deep Prajñāpāramitā, he perceived that the five skandhas are empty, and thus he was freed from all suffering. O Śāriputra, form is not different from emptiness, emptiness is not different from form. Form is emptiness, emptiness is form. The same is true for sensations, perceptions, mental formations, and consciousness. O Śāriputra, all phenomena are characterized by emptiness; they are neither produced nor destroyed, neither impure nor pure, neither increasing nor decreasing. Therefore, in emptiness, there is no form, no sensation, no perception, no mental formation, no consciousness; no eye, no ear, no nose, no tongue, no body, no mind; no sight, no sound, no smell, no taste, no touch, no mental objects; no realm of the eye, and so on, up to no realm of consciousness. There is no ignorance and no extinction of ignorance, and so on, up to no aging and death, and no extinction of aging and death. There are no Four Noble Truths, no wisdom, and no attainment. Because of non-attainment, bodhisattvas dwell in Prajñāpāramitā with no hindrance in their minds. Because there is no hindrance, they are free from fear, and having transcended perverted views, they reach the ultimate Nirvana. All Buddhas of the three times attain Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi by dwelling in Prajñāpāramitā. Therefore, know that Prajñāpāramitā is the great mantra, the mantra of great wisdom, the unsurpassed mantra, the unequalled mantra, which can remove all suffering and is true and not false. Therefore, proclaim the Prajñāpāramitā mantra, the mantra is: Gate Gate Pāragate Pārasaṃgate Bodhi Svāhā. The Heart Sutra. Tenth month, first day of the ninth year of the Zhenguan era.
