**American BeaverAmerican Beaver**
The American beaver is the largest rodent in North America and lives in rivers and wetland areas. Beavers have huge and sharp incisors that can chew through trees to obtain nutrients. The broken wood is combined with mud, stones, and branches into building materials to create dams and wetlands for nests. Beavers are also known as "ecosystem engineers" because their dam nests can help store water, improve water quality, and create a wetland environment that supports the survival of many wild animals. When forest fires occur, beaver wetlands can prevent the fire from spreading and provide shelter for animals. The organic matter at the bottom of the pond can also store carbon, effectively combating climate change.
In the 16th century, beavers were hunted in large numbers due to the popularity of the fur industry. It was not until the wetlands dried up and aquatic species gradually disappeared that people discovered the importance of beavers. After reintroduction and rehabilitation, the American beaver population recovered.
**IUCN level: Least Concern (LC) Formerly endangered**
