This small guinomi sake cup was hollowed out from a ball of clay. I weighed the clay ball of 500 grams and then started carving away to leave the finished piece weighing 145 grams. After wood firing the final piece weighed 137 grams.
I used a piece a rock found from the Taiwanese mountains to roll across the surface of the clay creating a texture that cannot be repeated.
The wood firing was successful (many are not). The piece was given a clear glaze and with the combination of melted wood ash, finished in a beautiful glassy coating. The blue color was a nice surprise. This piece has a blue coloring around the drinking lip. The glaze ran down near the foot ring but stopped just in time.
An additional feature of this intimate cup is that a fish is present near the foot ring. It was partically covered in glaze but still visible. Half encased with melted wood ash.
These particular cups are time consuming to make but the results are always unique.
My seal is stamped near the foot ring as well.
