I create my works based on the traditional Japanese craft of Ikkanbari. Ikkanbari is a method of covering a basket product with white washi paper, decorating it with colored washi paper or cloth, and finally applying persimmon tannins and water-based varnish.
It is a craft that requires finishing. Many of the pieces use old fabrics and paper, but my work uses more everyday materials.
This is a remake of an apron from Isa Oizumi Shochu, Kagoshima Prefecture. The letters on the apron are cut out and arranged with Japanese patterns of carp and waves on a black washi paper base, with gold foil as an accent. The inside is covered with light brown washi paper. A cloth drawstring bag is attached to change the look and hide the contents.
