What’s the difference? ✔︎ Bicolour patched with exquisite pure silk vintage Kimono made in Japan ✔︎ Pattern clash represented the way of Kimono coordinates since Kimono history began. ✔︎ Our original ’diagonal pocket’ and quality buttons selected thoroughly for UMUI BLACK LABEL This exclusive design is created with antique Cirimen (crape textile) Kimono. Purposely using the front and back fabric for one design. The Chirimen weaving technique, developed in the late 16th century, keeps the weft thread tighter than the warp thread during weaving process. That gives the fabric unique fine wrinkles on the surface and therewith a smooth and pleasant texture. Also we found it’s very handy and easy to care, almost wrinkle-free type of fabric. Perfect for both daily and vacation, such a nice relaxed holiday vibe with an attitude. UMUI shirt has purposely no yoke at the back shoulder. The authentic Kimono has it’s own elegance of the split back from the collar to the bottom hem. That is a secret of the beautiful movement of the silk Kimono that always has the original sewing method of the back. We take off all the stitches of Kimono by hand to be one flat fabric, wash and iron the fabric, draw designs, sew to reborn the Kimono for UMUI. UMUI team designs and the sewing is in charge of Machiko(79), over 50 years experienced local seamstresses. Her wisdom and high skill are the key of UMUI collection. She wouldn’t want to waste both fabric and history of Japanese artisan work of Kimono. She has a warm respect for vintage works and former Kimono seamstresses. Each item has her ingenious works in various corners of the items such as sleeves, front inner, collars, the pattern matching, balances and patch working. Those tiny efforts to save the material is her speciality. UMUI’ gift wrapping/box/packaging are all recyclable materials We aim to be human+eco-friendly for this project.
