Product Description

Artist introduction_ From the Zoology of New York (1842–1844), written by James Ellsworth De Kay and illustrated by John William Hill. John William Hill (1812-1879) was a British-born American artist who created watercolors, gouache, Stone, and prints. Hill's work focused primarily on natural subjects, including landscapes, still lifes, and ornithological and zoological subjects. In his watercolors and intaglio prints, Hill used the pointillism technique, using tiny brushstrokes to create softly graduated planes of color—a process commonly seen in miniature painting. Applied to larger canvases, the result was a form of objective realism that contrasted with the Romantic works more common in mid-19th-century American painting. Hill began working for the New York State Geological Survey in his early twenties, first creating a series of topographical studies and overhead views of major American towns. The work is distinguished by the accuracy of its aerial perspective and the recording of minute architectural details. These portraits of urban settlements required frequent travel to observe, sketch and map before completing the watercolor studies. The completed watercolors were then recreated as color lithographs and published by New York City publisher Smith Brothers. Later, Hill went on to work with the New York State Geological Survey, producing illustrations for James Ellsworth De Kay's Zoology of New York State.
