(Taiwanese Cherry Salmon) Also known as the Taiwanese salmon or Taiwanese trout, is the only temperate-zone fish that can be found in a subtropical region. It is a cherry salmon subspecies endemic to Taiwan. The Taiwanese salmon has a flat body, dark green on the back and silvery on the abdomen, with elliptic cloud-shaped spots lined on the two sides. With the uplift of the Taiwan island around 15,000 years ago at the close of a glacial era, most of the smooth-flowing rivers became steep and rushing and the relatively even area at the upstream Dajia River maintained the only livable environment for the Taiwanese salmon. However, there formed a small fault in midstream so the species became landlocked, unable to migrate to the sea. The Taiwanese salmon is one of the glacial relict species on Taiwan.
