Summer is here! As the temperature rises, it’s getting harder to stay cool in trousers and pants. Sadly, it’s not easy for men to simply switch into a pair of shorts and get on with the heat: some guys couldn’t stand the look, and some don’t know how to get the look. How do you make shorts look good on you?
First let’s look at some common styles:
Popular in Europe and America, chino shorts are not overly casual and go well with button-downs and blazers. Ironically, the fabric is reminiscent of boy’s high school uniforms in Asia, so it’s understandable why guys are not a fan.
Denim, on the other hand, is great for casual styles. Check these out:
Not only is denim easier to pull off, it comes in a variety of colors, washes and distressed styles. On top of that, denim is back in trend this year, so guys should feel confident going for this instant stylish upgrade.
However, even if these shorts appeal to you, understanding the materials is just the first step. How do you choose a pair that’s right for you? Denward offers tips on most common questions guys have:
1. How baggy should I go for?
A rule of thumb: if a pair of shorts are too tight, they do little to to compliment your legs; if they are too baggy, they add volume to your bottoms and thighs. Based on this, choose a pair that’s fitted just right and a bit wider than your thighs at the opening—they’ll make you look your best.
2. What’s the best length to wear?
The best length is knee-high or about 3 inches above the knees at most. Lengthy shorts make you look slumpy, and shorts too short make you feminine. Some guys wear longer shorts to cover their thighs or calves that they consider unattractive, but it might do more harm than good.
In the illustration, the left pair’s length is common in US and European street styles, but in reality they dress down your masculine side. Both the length in the middle and on the right are both too long and dull.
To sum up, choose a fitted pair just above your knees with the leg openings slightly wider than your thighs: now you can sit back and enjoy a manly summer in shorts.
